'Kobol's Last Gleaming' (Part 1) Story Code: '112' by Ronald D. Moore Story by David Eick |
Apollo is taught an important lesson while sparring with Adama at boxing; elsewhere, Starbuck and Baltar make out, but Starbuck cries out for Apollo rather than for the doctor. While Boomer sits in her quarters contemplating suicide, her counterpart on Caprica tries to follow Helo, who has now learnt that she is a Cylon. Confronted by the woman he thought he loved, Helo shoots ‘Boomer’ in the shoulder and takes her prisoner, hoping to use her as a means to escape the Cylon-occupied world. Back at the fleet, President Rosen seeks out Priest Elosha, who is convinced that the ancient prophecies concerning their salvation are coming true. Baltar is becoming increasingly fraught with Number 6’s visits, and flies into a rage at her during a meeting with the President; Number 6 warns the new Vice President to leave the Galactica, and then vanishes. Boomer and Crashdown go out on patrol and immediately come across an Earth-type planet - could it be Kobol, the birthplace of mankind? Apollo confronts Starbuck over her sleeping with Baltar, but the two of them come to blows. The senior staff meet to examine aerial reconnaissance photographs of the planet, but while Adama and Tigh see ruins, the President sees a vision of a cityscape - one which exactly matches the illustration of Kobol in Elosha’s sacred books. After a visit from Baltar, the confused Boomer finally pulls the trigger, but her suicide attempt fails, and her face is left badly injured. Although Adama is unconvinced that they have found the legendary world of Kobol, he agrees to send a survey team to investigate; remembering Number 6’s warning, Baltar instantly volunteers to go. The President believes that they should send the captured Cylon ship back to Caprica, to retrieve a mystic relic known as the ‘Arrow of Apollo’, which, when used in the Tomb of Athena on Kobol, will show the way to Earth; however, Adama refuses to allow such a dangerous mission, believing it could lead the Cylons right to them. The survey team heads down to the planet surface in three Raptors – only to fly straight into a mass of Cylon raiders; one of the Raptors is destroyed, one manages to return to the Galactica – while the third - containing Baltar, Crashdown and Tyrol - is sent plummeting out of control towards the surface of the planet…
