While parked in their camper van outside the shopping mall where Frohike is currently working as Santa, the Lone Gunmen receive a Christmas gift from an unknown admirer: a rare Commander Crunch cereal whistle. The trio decide to use the toy’s high-pitched tone to fill in the gaps in the waveform fragment transmitted by the Medici-3 satellite; unfortunately the whistle’s call draws the attention of others, and both Langly and Frohike are abducted by aliens, taken aboard the little grey creatures’ spaceship, and subjected to experimentation and probing. Elsewhere, Mulder has survived his kidnapping attempt and arrived in Homerton, Illinois; here he is met by Gibson Praise, and taken to a nearby diner. Having tracked Mulder’s plane, Agent Scully, Assistant Director Ana Morales and an F.B.I. team puzzle over the condition of the dead passengers and crew, while searching for signs of Mulder; returning to her motel room, Scully is contacted by Byers, who needs her help in searching for his missing colleagues. Mulder learns that Gibson is playing a long game against the faceless aliens, but before he can press for more information they are attacked by one of the rebel creatures. Byers and Scully track the waveform and arrive outside Edgerton County, where they witness the arrival of a giant flying saucer. Not far away, Gibson and Mulder have survived the assault, and also see the spaceship… Shortly afterwards, Mulder is surprised to be reunited with Scully and the Lone Gunmen, but wonders where Gibson has gone; it seems that none of them can remember why they are there, or what has recently happened to them…
