'A Beginning' by Terry Nation

Dissent is rife amongst the members of Abby's community; a vehement argument breaks out when Greg trades their precious petrol for bad seed; a fox kills all the chickens after John fails to close the gate properly; and everyone feels overworked and under-appreciated. Abby finds that the weight of leadership is beginning to prove too much for her to cope with; Jenny encourages her to take some time off to look for Peter, and although Abby is unsure what to do, she does know that Jenny is pregnant. Later that day, a group of people arrive at the manor house; their leader tells Greg that they have been driven out of their settlement by a militia group that have appointed themselves as the local government, and so they are searching for somewhere else to settle. They ask to leave a sick girl at the manor house, but Greg refuses; however, they leave her behind anyway, and when Abby decides to bring the girl inside the house, she and Greg have a blazing row over her actions, which could jeopardise the community. Abby decides to leave and heads for Waterhouse, the manor house where her recent acquaintance Jimmy Garland lives. Meanwhile Greg and Arthur attempt to encourage the various communities in the area to band together and form an alliance against the threat of the militia group...
