'The New World' by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens

In Vancouver, a base-jumper leaps from a skyscraper – only to be mauled to death by a pteranodon... At Cross Photonics, genius inventor Evan Cross offers security specialist Mac Rendell the opportunity to join his Special Projects team as a field operative, working alongside physics prodigy Toby Nance and his C.E.O., Ange Finch in their headquarters, ‘The Tank’. Matt’s first mission is to join Evan and Toby as they set off to investigate a magnetic anomaly in the city’s Stanley Park. However, while they are gone, an intruder breaks into the Tank: Connor Temple, from the U.K’s Anomaly Research Centre… At the park, Evan encounters Predator Control Group expert Dylan Weir; together they track down a magnetic spike and discover a shining time portal that has opened in a nearby tunnel – and which has allowed a vicious utahraptor to break into the present. In an attempt to evade the creature Evan and Dylan jump through the anomaly and find themselves millions of years in Earth’s past; when the vicious utahraptor follows them, the duo manage to leap back through the portal just as it closes. But as Evan and Dylan race back to join Toby and Mac, they are unaware that a second vicious utahraptor is still at large in the park… Returning to the Tank, Evan confesses to his team that he knew about the time portals and dinosaurs; Dylan immediately calls her boss, Drake, at the PCG, only to learn that he has been working alongside Evan in tracking down anomalies and prehistoric monsters. Hearing a scream from inside the Plaza, Drake immediately sets off to investigate; but by the time Evan, Dylan and Matt arrive on the scene it is too late: they find only Drake’s body, savagely mutilated. While Dylan and the authorities deal with the situation, Evan is approached by Connor, who warns him that interfering with the anomalies could cause history to unravel; however, this just serves to further pique Evan’s curiosity… Meanwhile, Ange makes contact with Lieutenant Ken Leeds, head of ‘Project Magnet’, the Canadian government's defunct bureau for investigating alien life and other mysteries; Ken has been keeping a file on Evan, and he offers to help with the dinosaur threat… Learning of a missing boy and a potential bear attack in the park, Evan, Mac and Dylan race to the scene; they soon locate the boy, cowering in fear beneath a huge pteranodon. The team swiftly deal with the creature – but then the other utahraptor appears, hungry for prey…
