'The Ball' by Daniel Postgate

Tiny and Small play with a ball of Granny’s wool, but Small throws it so hard it flies off into space. Seeing a silver ball floating out there too, Small takes the Music Boat and retrieves the object, which he and Tiny then use to continue playing. When Small throws the ball into a crater, it bounces down into the Clangers’ caves, making a musical noise and glowing as it goes. Tiny and Small find the ball and carry on playing; but then Mother tells them to treat the ball with respect, as it may actually be a living thing…
