‘Children of the Stones’ tells the story of astrophysicist Adam Brake and his son Matthew, who arrive in the village of Milbury in order to study the ancient stone circle that surrounds it. However, they soon learn that all is not as it should be in the peaceful village, as they uncover a sinister secret that links the stone circle with a black hole in space and an ancient and overwhelming power…

This seven-parter was written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray, who also worked on classic programmes such as ‘Raven’ and ‘The Professionals’. Executive producer Patrick Dromgoole had also found acclaim with shows such as ‘Sky’, ‘The Georgian House’, ‘Into the Labyrinth’ and ‘Robin of Sherwood’. The capable Gareth Thomas, best known as Blake in ‘Blake’s 7’, took on the role of Adam Brake, with Iain Cuthbertson the perfect foil as the charmingly villainous Rafael Hendrick. In an inspired choice of location it was filmed in the beautiful village of Avebury in Wiltshire, the oldest village in England that is surrounded by a stone circle. (Well worth a visit if you fancy a day out!)

‘Children of the Stones’ is extremely well made, and still holds up today as a classic slice of telefantasy. Indeed, it is one of the most fondly remembered shows of the 1970s, and holds a special place in the memories of those children who watched it on its initial transmission in a state of excitement and terror - myself included! It’s now out on DVD, so if you haven’t seen it, then treat yourself!
