'The Super Scouts' (Part 1) by Glen A. Larson

Having caught up with the Galactica and her fleet, the Cylons launch a surprise attack. Fearing for the safety of the fleet’s children, Commander Adama orders their evacuation to Earth; Lieutenant Troy and Lieutenant Dillon take a shuttlecraft down to western America, along with a party of children, now disguised as scouts. However, they soon draw attention to themselves when they try to exchange gold cubits for cash at a bank, an incident that unwittingly leads to Dillon accidentally robbing the place. Pursued by the police, Troy, Dillon and the children hide out in the woods, using a device that makes them invisible. But then the children become ill after drinking water from a stream contaminated by a local chemical plant…
