'Somnambulist' Story Code '1ADH11' by Tim Minear

Asleep in his apartment, Angel experiences a nightmare in which he drains the blood of a young woman. Elsewhere, Kate attends a crime scene, and finds the dead body of the same girl, with bite marks on her neck and a cross carved into her cheek - it seems that the dream has become a reality. The next morning, Angel visits Kate for help in a case he is working on, and is shocked to see photos of the body on her desk. Meanwhile, Wesley sees a newspaper article on the murder, and realises the killings resemble a run of murders that Angelus committed in the 1700’s; he tells Cordelia of his suspicions, and then confronts Angel over the killing. Angel agrees to have himself chained to his bed, to determine if he really is responsible for the murder; after having two more nightmares, flashing back to his time as Angelus, he realises that the killings are the work of Penn, a vampire he sired and trained over two-hundred years ago. Angel and Wesley track down Penn’s hideout, and manage to arrive at the same time as Kate; when Penn makes to attack the detective she fires her gun at him, only to find that the bullets have no effect. Angel and his protégé break into a fight, but Penn is able to escape. Despite having seen Angel’s vampire face, Kate still refuses to believe that vampires exist. Meanwhile, at Angel Investigations, Cordelia meets a new client: Penn. He tricks her into revealing Kate’s address, but she soon realises who he really is, just as Angel and Wesley arrive. Penn escapes, but the team continue their investigation, and soon determine that his next target will be children at a school. However, Penn instead kidnaps Kate and drags her into the sewers. Angel tracks him down, and a fight breaks out; Penn gets the upper hand, but Kate stabs Angel through the stomach with a piece of wood, ensuring that it passes through him harmlessly but pierces Penn straight in the heart, killing him.
